We are active.
All pupils will leave South Norwood physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and life- long participation in physical activity and sports.
Planning
P.E Pro, the scheme of work used, will demonstrate the balance of visual, auditory and kinesthetic elements to ensure that all pupils with different learning styles can access the learning experience. The importance of ‘high quality’ planning must include challenges for pupils, which involve developing:
- A sense of accomplishment/achievement
- Learning something new and wanting to learn more
- Physical and mental well-being
- A feeling of independence
- Wanting to perform well and with imagination and flair
The department will ensure that long term planning through the curriculum map shows a clear and concise outline for the units/activities to be taught within each year group for the duration of the academic year. Through medium-term planning, learning objectives and a progression of skills are planned and reviewed termly. Using the progression map, teachers will ensure they utilise the key learning objectives for their lessons and take into account pupils’ needs to ensure all pupils’ can achieve that objective by the end of the lesson.
Participation in Sport, at all levels, is at the heart of our ethos at South Norwood. Sport teaches teamwork, resilience, discipline and all important lessons in winning and losing.
We believe in sport for all and from the earliest age our girls and boys enjoy a range of sports and games.
Children have specialist PE, Games and swimming lessons, making full use of the facilities on offer.
They are coached in a wide range of sport including football, netball, hockey, basketball, cricket, golf, gymnastics, athletics and dance. Children who participate in sport will have regular competitive fixtures against local schools and children of all abilities enjoy representing their school.
House competitions and our Sports Days for all children from Reception to Year 6 encourages all children to do their best in a fun, nurturing environment.
South Norwood has an excellent reputation of sporting success in local & regional competitions, leagues and tournaments and regularly have the opportunity to try out for professional clubs like Chelsea & Crystal Palace.
For any questions relating to sport at South Norwood please contact Coach Mickey mmullin@southnorwood.croydon.sch.uk
Football
All children receive high quality coaching during PE lessons and Football Clubs.
We have four main squads with around 20 children in each.
Year 1+2 Mixed
Year 3+4 Mixed
Year 5+6 Girls
Year 5+6 Boys
Players in year 1-4 train once a week after school and year 5-6 train twice a week, once in the morning before school at 8am and again after school. Our team ethos is to always work hard and never give up. This ethos must first be shown in the classroom before translating onto the pitch.
Competitive matches are played against many local schools from Year 3 up to Year 6. We aim for every child involved to represent the School throughout the year.
The school has achieved great success over the past few years in football across many age groups with our girl’s senior team winning the Croydon Schools 22/23 League and our boys finishing second in theirs.
We have also had a number of players try out for various professional clubs and now have boys and girls playing for the likes of Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
Netball
he Netball team at South Norwood is thriving and the majority of the girls regularly play in league and cup fixtures. Netball is also taught to all children in PE as it teaches the key fundamentals of passing and moving in team sport.
Basketball
At South Norwood we are extremely lucky to receive elite level coaching from iBall Basketball Academy.
iBall is a Basketball Foundation specializing in development training, coaching and basketball themed events. They are passionate about basketball, and about young people enjoying and becoming involved in this beautiful game.
2023/24: South Norwood senior team will take part in the first ever Croydon Primary School Basketball League which is managed and run by iBall in partnership with the Croydon Schools Sports Council.

Gymnastics
South Norwood Gymnastics Club is run by J’amies Gymnastics Academy: the biggest provider of recreational gymnastics in south east England.
Throughout the year, children who excel in their after school club may be asked to train at one of JGA’s 9 state of the art gymnastics centres based around South London. This allows for more places for beginners to become available.
Some children will be selected to represent the school at various tournaments, events and masterclasses.Meet the team: https://jamiesgymnasticsacademy.co.uk/ourteam/
Dance
Dance club is one of our most popular after school sessions and our children absolutely love it.
Both KS1 & KS2 dance groups will work towards the end of year ‘Let Your Feet Compete’ competition at Trinity’s Mitre Theatre in front of over 300 guests and judges.
Dance is also provided to all children in PE by Croydon Schools Dance Association and Aim High Dance Academy.
